Gerbils as Pets: The Hamsters of the Future

Nobody can deny the popularity of hamsters throughout the years as a fun, easy to maintain pet. However, anybody who has ever owned a hamster has also discovered that they are far from the perfect pet. Sure, they're cute, they're funny, and they're gentle, but as a pet, they have their flaws.

Gerbils, on the other hand, may not be perfect, but as a pet, they come much closer to the ideal that people are looking for; especially when they're giving the pet to their children.

Consider the following comparison between gerbils and hamsters, and you'll soon find that gerbils may very well be the hamsters of the future.

Gerbils have a unique sleep and activity cycle that alternates between playing and napping all day and all night long. This means that you'll be able to watch them play, and have some "time off" at any time of the day or night. Hamsters, on the other hand, are entirely nocturnal. This means that if you or your child is only up during the daytime, almost all of your time with your pet will happen during naptime.

Healthy gerbils are extremely active, curious creatures that are always racing about, digging, running in the wheel, playing, gnawing, and doing lots of other entertaining activities. Hamsters are lazy balls of fluff that only waddle on the running wheel and prefer to sit around.

Gerbils are very social creatures, preferring to live in pairs, and enjoying your company very much. Hamsters are solitary creatures that enjoy living alone, are prone to fighting when sharing a cage, and will even cannibalize their own young!

Mongolian gerbils - another name for the standard gerbil - are extremely curious. They are quick to investigate anything new in the cage, and are always watching what you're doing when you're in the same room. Hamsters are easily startled and will even fear bite for simple reasons such as being awakened in the daytime.

And, perhaps the best thing about gerbil keeping is how clean they are! Since they're native to the deserts of Mongolia, they take in little water, and therefore produce very little urine. This means that the cage needs far less cleaning, and it doesn't get smelly until quite a long time has passed. Hamsters get very smelly, very fast. This can be kept to a minimum by putting a "litter box" in the corner of the cage, but the whole thing will need cleaning frequently, and you'll need to get used to that special odor coming from the cage only a few days after the last wash.

Since today's pet owners have the internet available to them to help them to make informed decisions about pet ownership, it isn't too much of a stretch to believe that gerbils may soon be the more popular pet among rodent keepers.

Hamsters - The Best 3 Hamster Toys You Can Buy

Hamsters are fantastic pets for children because they are so energetic and keen to play. They are also relatively easy to care for, and can really teach children a lot about raising an animal.

Because they are so alert and lively, it is important that you give your hamsters sufficient toys to play with, so that they can exercise both their bodies and their minds. Here are the 3 most popular types of toys, and why each is important:

1. A Running Wheel

In the wild, hamsters are known to explore several miles every night in their search for food. Caged hamsters are just as active, and need a way to expel all of this energy. A running wheel is the perfect solution, because it allows your pet to do exactly what it would do in the wild without needing lots of space.

2. Houses and Tunnels

As active as they are, hamsters sometimes feel the need to hide away and have a little alone time. For this reason, it's essential to give them somewhere to go when they want to be on their own. Houses and tunnels provide great places for them to go for a bit of solitude.

3. Climbing Toys

Another thing that these little creatures love to do is to climb. You may find that your hamster develops a habit of climbing its cage bars. This is great, but you can make it even more enjoyable by giving them a selection of ladders, platforms, and ropes to explore.

By providing your hamsters with a good selection of toys, they will be able to live even more active and enjoyable lives. Not only does this benefit them and their health, but it also makes them more likely to want to play - which is one of the reasons kids love them so much!

Prepare Yourself For the Newborn Dwarf Hamsters

Dwarf hamsters breeding is not as difficult as it may seem. What is important is that you know what to expect when this happens. Here are some interesting facts about dwarf hamster. Care for dwarf hamsters especially their babies is important. Did you know that these hamsters have roughly 18 to 2 days of gestation period? Likewise, expect a litter of around 5 pups. But you can expect as much as ten or as little as just one. Keep this in mind when you plan to breed these cute and cuddly pets.

As much as you want to take care of these new pups, it is best to give this task to their mother in the first 10 days (at least). During this time, care for dwarf hamsters is quite sensitive. Make sure that you do not change the cage nor touch the little ones.

Dwarf hamsters breeding entail understanding the development of baby hamsters. During the first four days from birth they will start having pigments and coloration on their body. On the seventh day, your baby dwarf hamsters will begin to have fur on their bodies. So don't freak out if you find the little with hairless little creatures - it's normal at this stage. Within a week or so, the babies will be ready for their solid food. As part of a healthy diet, you can provide your new pets with oats, oatmeal or wheat germ. Small bird seeds will also do the trick in providing their first solid food. After this, you may opt to give them lab blocks as their staple food. Healthy nutrition for your newborn pups must be given full attention. So make sure you give them slices of apples, cucumber and even small grains so they will grow faster. Providing ample water is also important. As early as 10 days, they will begin to drink water other than nursing from the mother. Furthermore, you will notice that as soon as the babies can feed themselves, the mother will slowly lessen her nursing the babies.

More often than not, the mother hamsters are not enthusiastic in sharing the responsibility of caring for their young. So stop yourself from the urge to handle these new babies to avoid possible injuries to the hamster as well as to you. You can give the new babies their own cages after 4 weeks. As an additional reminder, make sure you separate the male hamsters from the female hamsters to control their population.

These interesting facts about dwarf and cute hamsters will help you manage them better and ensure their health.

Things to Consider When Buying a Hamster

When buying a hamster, there are quite a few details to consider. You'll need to think about the age and sex of the hamster, the best place to purchase your new pet, and where you'll set up the cage and accessories in your home. When buying a hamster, you'll also need to purchase the hamster's cage, bedding, food, and accessories at the same time, so that you'll have a home for your new friend. Keeping the following items in mind as you purchase a hamster will help keep both you and your new pet safe and happy.

Choose a Reputable Retailer

First, when buying a hamster, you'll need to choose a reputable retailer. You may decide to purchase your hamster directly from a breeder, or to purchase from a pet store. Either way, be sure that the establishment is clean, dry, and well-kept. Check to see that the animals appear healthy and well cared for. If animals appear sickly, diseased, or ill, do not purchase from the retailer.

Purchase a Young Hamster

Ask about the age of the hamster that you're purchasing. When buying a hamster, you'll want to choose a young hamster, since they only live for three to five years. At this time, you should also determine if your hamster is male or female. This information will be important in the future, if you decide you'd like to breed your hamster or if you'd like to purchase another hamster.

Remember that Hamsters are Nocturnal

As you set up your hamster's new home, keep in mind that hamsters are nocturnal animals. They like to sleep for the majority of the day, then run and play after the sun goes down, while you're trying to sleep. You may want to set the cage up away from your sleeping area, so that your new pet's activity doesn't disturb you.

If you'll be putting the hamster's cage in a bedroom, choose a hamster wheel and other toys that are as quiet as possible, so that night time noises aren't so intrusive. Your hamster can't help making noise at night; he's just being himself.

Keep Your New Hamster Safe from Other Pets

If you have other, larger pets, such as a dog or a cat, you'll need to keep them in mind when buying a hamster. Dogs and cats are predators, and they may see the hamster as prey. To keep your new friend safe, keep the cage far out of reach of larger animals in your home. If possible, keep a closed door between your hamster and your other animals, as cats and dogs have been known to overturn hamster cages to get at their occupants. This can be disastrous for all concerned, and it's better to prevent this type of problem than to deal with the aftermath.

Important Factors When Buying a Rabbit Cage

Many families will decide at some point to bring a pet into their home. Depending on your kids there are many options for fun pets including dogs, cats, fish and hamsters. One of the more popular pet animals after cats and dogs are rabbits. Cute, cuddly and easy to care for, rabbits make excellent pets for small kids in large families and if you plan on bringing rabbits into your home make sure you carefully research the type of rabbit cages available and what makes sense for your rabbits.

First you have to decide if you will be keeping your rabbit(s) inside in a cage or outside in a hutch. Indoor rabbit cages have the advantage of keeping your furry friend away from larger predator animals and foul weather including heavy rains and cold air. When you know where the cage will be kept then you can start thinking about how large a cage you will need depending on the number of rabbits you will have and what size each will be. You don't want a rabbit cage to be too small since the rabbit will grow and soon run out of room and won't be very comfortable in his home.

Experts recommend using a cage that is approximately four times the size of the rabbit being caged. This will leave ample room for the bunny to hop around without feeling constricted. You will also want to check on the type of mesh wire being used for the cage and the spacing in between so your rabbits don't accidentally slip out when you are asleep. Many rabbit owners have trouble finding a cage that is ideal for their homes and will end up rigging their own in line with pens for puppies and kittens. Combining the rabbit cage with grid shelving and other safe materials allows for owners to custom build a holding pen that will keep the rabbits safe from harm and easy to watch over.

Wire cages will require some form of flooring to give the rabbits a more comfortable surface for sleeping on and moving over. Rabbits have delicate feet and a wire cage floor can cause injury to their feet bottoms so be sure to cover wire floors with soft mats or even burlap to offer some cushioned support.

Lastly, when choosing a rabbit cage for your bunny pets make sure it comes equipped with a solid door unit that will allow you to safely keep the rabbits inside at night or when you are away. You can find doors that open outwards, slide up and down, open from the top of the cage and even some that the rabbit can manipulate to let himself in or out. Depending on your needs and the safety of the rabbits choose a door system that is easy to use and can be counted on to lock when you need it shut.

Chinese Dwarf Hamster Information

You won't find too many Chinese Dwarf Hamsters that are pets today. This is because the breeding is quite difficult and you can't own them in the majority of the United States. However, if you head to the northern parts of China and Mongolia you will find them running around in the deserts.

When you first see them they look more like a mouse as opposed to a hamster. If the truth be told they are actually part of the rat-like family of hamsters. You can tell just by looking at their long tails and bodies. If you are one of the lucky ones that owns a Chinese hamster you will notice they are around 10-12 centimeters when they are full grown. This still might confuse you a little and if that's the case just look at their colors. You will find that the majority of Chinese dwarf hamsters have a grayish-brown color with a racing stripe (black) down their spine. When you turn them over you will see that the belly is white. This is the predominant colors, although there are two other color mutations out there. These are considered "wild traits," which revolve around the dominate spot and the black eyed white version.

If you decide to purchase Chinese dwarf hamsters, don't make one of the most common mistakes out there today. See, even though experts will tell you that pairing up dwarf hamsters is a good idea, you want to purchase an individual Chinese dwarf hamster. The females are by far the dominate sex in this race and they will seriously injure or kill the males. However, if you are set on purchasing more than one we recommend choosing the same race and making sure they have enough room. You can do this by getting a cage that is more than one level, which will allow them to make a new home without worrying about the other hamster. We also suggest purchasing a plastic or aquarium tank as opposed to a cage. Getting stuck in a wire cage can be a traumatic experience for anyone, especially children. In the end the best option is two females. Just make sure you get them at an early age so they will have a better chance of getting along.

Feeding Chinese Dwarf hamsters are very similar to any other hamster. We recommend seeds and pellets or fruits and veggies. You probably want to give them treats here and there, but something like Cheerios will be just fine. Then again, we do know some owners who feed them things like crickets and mealworms. Whatever you choose, make sure they have a fresh water supply on a daily basis. The best option here is a plastic bottle so you don't have to clean the litter all the time.

Chinese Dwarf hamsters last about 2-3 years. Some of them you will be able to train or tame and others will not be able to be broken. Actually, most experts consider them to be more aggressive than most and extremely agile. When you see them jump for the first time you won't believe it. This is also true when they hop on their exercise wheel, because Chinese Dwarf hamsters are extremely fast. If you take the time to secure the cage properly, you won't have to worry about them trying to make an escape. In the end, if you're a beginner we highly recommend choosing another hamster. This is especially true if you plan on getting one for a child under 12.
